Happy Monday! I have a few spare minutes at the end of this work day and thought, hey! I have some things I love! Why not share them today instead of holding until Friday when I inevitably get way too busy and don’t send?
Don’t you love the self-imposed deadlines and “work” we give ourselves that no one else even notices? A friend recently brought up that she was working herself super hard to send her podcasts, emails, and posts out on a schedule, then realized that schedule was created entirely by… her.
I think any time we’re putting out a project or fun lil newsletter posts like this one, we always need to check in with ourselves and only continuing doing it at a cadence and format that ultimately feel easy or enjoyable or stimulating or all the other things that make us feel good, and not bring all our ideas about optimization to them… it will inevitably turn a creative outlet into work!
And a silly little list of 5 things I love should never feel like work… It really is me just talking into my keyboard, metaphorically.
Onwards…
5 things I loved in the past few weeks:
I’ve been listening to “Murder on the Dancefloor” incessantly since watching Saltburn, and came across this fun compilation that reminded me of something I’d find on Stumbleupon in 2010.
Another great YouTube algorithmic rec was this dance company’s Jungle-esque performance of “Somebody That I Used To Know,” a song that got too much shit and is actually still a major slapper!!
Speaking of YouTube compilations I love, I used to watch this TMC 31 Days of Oscar promo from 2008 over and over and thought about it during Oscar season.
Dune: Part Two is SO good. I’m in shock original movies like this are still being made. It blew my mind. Every time I thought the plot would go to a cliche place it totally swerved. I don’t love Timmy but I can overlook him. If you somehow haven’t seen the first, watch and then go watch this while you still can in theaters.
The Bachelor, baby!! Friends know I’m a longtime Bachelor head, like back to Deanna’s season in… 2008. But I had to skip some of the recent seasons because it was starting to feel too stale. They also had a real issue with picking male leads that make you go, “Him???” BUT I had heard good things about this season so quickly binged and caught up and my thoughts are Joey = 😍 the first charming male lead in years??? And the girls are all so gorgeous in a non-Instagram face way and have PERSONALITIES! Real personalities! Really hoping they pick Maria for Bachelorette. I’m like JGL in this scene of 10 Things I Hate About You. Me + The Bachelor, it’s just natural ok?? I didn’t enjoy our break from each other.
There were two weeks there where all I was doing was working, watching The Bachelor, and watching Love is Blind. The recent season was pretty dang fun. My unpopular opinion is that I’m rooting for Clay and AD, and Jimmy is… great?
Where’s My Utopia? by Yard Act. The first full-length album I’ve found interesting since Olivia Rodrigo’s, which means I am getting old and only want to listen to my old music…. but this one is good!!
And one hard pass:
Oof, I started a few books and then didn’t finish. One was The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. Read about half. Honestly can’t remember the others. Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday was either too smart for me or just needed to make more sense! Still, I feel bad critiquing books because it’s all very personal and hey I haven’t written a book.
